Your body is intelligent. When there's a cut, the body triggers a repair process to heal the wound. Damaged blood vessels constrict to stop bleeding and biochemicals are released when forming a scab: a necessary protective layer. White blood cells enter the compromised area to digest dead cells, any debris, and bacteria - an inflammatory response that is part of the healing process. A new layer of skin emerges, rebuilding and strengthening the vital biological boundary between your internal landscape and our outside world. When your mind experiences a psychological wound, it moves along a similar path. With an emotional cut, the mind enters survival mode triggering defense mechanisms to maintain daily functioning. As safety is prioritized and established, the debris of a past event is able to be processed often involving inflammatory responses that are sensitive to external triggers. This sensitivity may reflect a deep remembrance and mourning. With trauma-informed healing, your brain learns how to reduce and neutralize the emotional charge of the event to rebuild authentic and healthier ways of telling your story. The traumatic event becomes a healed wound that allows you to emerge as an integrated self who can continue living. You, as the intelligent and whole being that you are, already have the tools to begin again any time you need and as you return to what's meaningful.
